Despite this manga being about a group of dysfunctional wizards and their many adventures, war was always a prevalent part of Hiro Mashima’s storytelling. Oracion Seis, Tenroe Island, and the Tartaros arcs are about the Fairy Tail guild’s ongoing war with the Ballam Alliance. The Edolas arc was what happens when a third party involves itself in a war and the collateral damage that comes from a war. The Fighting Festival arc was a civil war within the Fairy Tail guild. The first arc that put war into perspective was the Phantom Lord arc, which introduced Gajeel Redfox, who would become one of the central cast members of the manga from then on out. It seemed fitting that Fairy Tail ended on a war, because war has been a central theme of the manga. The Alvarez Empire covers Chapters 438 to 545 and tells the story of the Alvarez Empire invading Fiore. Because no matter all the batshit crazy things that were happening, the Fairy Tail guild members were still the most important pieces.
And in the final arc of this long running manga series, Hiro Mashima made sure he focused on that aspect the most. It was always a story about a broken, dysfunctional family that loved each other. It ranges from brilliant (The Fighting Festival arc, Tenroe Island, and The Grand Magic Games) to kind of awful (Galuna Island arc and Sun Village arc), but it also had the essence of fun that it radiated from chapter 1. It has it’s ups and downs, but it is one of the manga that I have enjoyed the most.
Fairy Tail goes out swinging with it’s most emotional arc that has more surprises than I actually expected.
